One of the best ways to feel confident and gorgeous is to dress for your body shape – that is, hide the parts you’re not so happy with, and accentuate your best bits – whether that’s by highlighting your curves, making the most of your bust or getting your pins out.
But before you decide to dress to your body shape, you need to know what your body shape is. There are four main body types – apple, pear, hourglass and straight/rectangular. There are plenty of resources online that can help you decide what body shape you have.
The main thing you really need to know is that you should wear clothes that make the most of the things you love about yourself, and draw attention away from the bits you’re not quite so fond of. It sounds simple and obvious, but it’s something that many of us forget to think about when we’re out clothes shopping. And it’s so easy to get wrong!
For example if you have a big bust, you should absolutely make the most of it with a plunging neckline to show off your cleavage. On the other hand, if you have a smaller chest you might want to avoid low-cut dresses and instead go for a scoop or bandeau neckline.
You may want to draw attention up to your bust and away from your waist if you are more of an apple shape. In this case, you can try an embellished neckline or halter top, or you could divert attention to your hips with a chain or sash belt draped lower than your waist. This will also elongate your torso.
Pear shaped girls have full hips and thighs, with a smaller bust. So if you want to hide your thighs, opt for dresses that are no shorter than two inches above the knee. A layered necklace can draw attention away from the lower half of your body (and also really dress up an outfit!)
Plus size girls may want to go for wrap dresses or dresses that drape, avoiding bulky layers. If you prefer not to show your arms, ¾ length or billowy bell sleeves are a great alternative to shorter sleeves or sleeveless dresses.
If you are very slim you could try some layers, and a belt to add definition to your waist. Layers and belts are a great way to add curves and shape to an outfit. Maxi dresses are a fun and stylish way to hide your legs if you want to – but if your legs are shapely and toned, coming up to the summer there’s no better time to get your hands on a shorter skater dress!
